Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
The Canaries are an underknown and underrated sailing destination. The main benefits are it's warm and windy (but not too hot), and it's a short haul flight and on the same time zone as Europe. The islands are varied and all conveniently a day sail from each other. When you are on land there is loads to do, including amazing hikes, world class diving, dramatic scenery, beaches and watersports. Forget the lunar landscape of Lanzarote, or the package holiday resorts, we will be looking for nature, beauty and fine food - that's what we call adventure sailing!
Our aim is to get out and see a couple of the more remote islands of La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. These lesser developed, lesser visited western islands each have a distinct character. El Hierro feels more like one of the Azores, with its amazing biodiversity and natural rock swimming pools. La Palma has the largest volcanic crater in the world, a staggering 16 miles across, with nature trails and wildlife, and abundant springs that keep the landscape lush. The peak boasts some of the cleanest air in the world and is the site of a fantastic observatory. La Gomera has the Los Organos cliffs, as well as national parks, nice walks and scenic vistas, all easily explorable by car.
Meanwhile the warm trade winds make the island a watersports destination, and also make for lively and fun sailing, with some decent length day sails followed by safe harbours and easy access to the shore. For those more into cities than nature, you won't be disappointed by the European culture, food and civilisation of the islands.
