Antigua to Gibraltar/UK
26th April – 23rd May 2022
Join Skyelark 2 as she comes back across the pond in April 2022. This passage departs from Antigua and includes a brief stop in the Azores. After a day or so settling in onboard, we depart on a northerly route against the northeast trade winds up to a latitude close to Bermuda where we will hope to find the westerly trades and head directly to the Azores arriving 13-14 days later.
You can expect a bit of everything weather wise and the start of the passage is one of the more challenging trips we offer as it is up wind into trades and ocean swell. There is often a period of calm as we cross the Azores high and then a downwind sleigh ride into Horta.
There will be the opportunity to take some time to explore the beautiful and dramatic island of Faial. Horta is a small and lovely harbour town, unspoilt by tourism with a few wonderful local restaurants. This is a major cross roads in the yachting world where the bustling harbour and the legendary 'Peter Café Sport' provides a warm and friendly welcome for like-minded folk to exchange salty tales.
The Azores are a quiet and beautiful place, known for their volcanoes they have a dramatic landscape and black beaches, they are fertile and produce amazing local produce, cheeses, meats and wines as well as bountiful seafood. For the energetic there are amazing hikes and surfing, or for a more relaxed experience, rent a car or go whale watching.
For the more adventurous, why not take a short ferry ride across to the island of Pico where you can climb the highest mountain in Portugal!
Leaving from Horta we will call in at Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island, which is the 'main island' and has some great sightseeing. If time allows we may also divert south to the tiny island of Santa Maria, before the 5-7 day sail to Gibraltar.
